Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 6:1-21
“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called.” — 1 Timothy 6:12 (KJV)
In the sixth chapter of the First Epistle to Timothy, the Apostle Paul gives us several important teachings concerning our behavior toward others, false and true teachers, genuine faith, wealth, and the good fight of faith.
Through this passage, we discover how our conduct can influence those around us, how to recognize teaching that is truly centered on Jesus Christ, and what attitude we should adopt toward material possessions.
1. Our Behavior Should Lead Others to Respect God
1 Timothy 6:1-2
In Timothy's time, within the church of Ephesus, there were different social classes, particularly the rich and the poor. Among those who had converted, many were slaves serving masters, some of whom were unbelievers.
The Apostle Paul instructs them to regard their masters as worthy of respect so that God's name and His doctrine would not be blasphemed.
Even today, we observe that many wealthy people, including in our city of Goma, are not necessarily believers.
However, our behavior as Christians should positively influence those who do not yet know the Lord.
Even when our supervisor or employer is a Christian, we must continue to show them respect. Sharing the same faith or hearing the same Word of God does not give us the right to despise or belittle them.
Just because we have heard a teaching about how a leader should behave does not mean we should begin disrespecting our own supervisor.
Such an attitude can lead others to insult or blaspheme the name of the Lord.
Our behavior toward both believers and unbelievers should inspire others to respect the name of God.
Let us therefore ask ourselves this question:
Can our attitude lead others to believe in our God?
Consider Joseph when he was in prison. The cupbearer and the baker, who were also prisoners, found in him someone who could help them understand their dreams. Even in prison, Joseph demonstrated God's presence in his life.
What about us?
In our present circumstances, amid our difficulties, poverty, or even unemployment, can others see God through our lives?
Even when we have nothing yet, does our behavior reflect our faith, or do we simply behave like the people of this world?
This is a question each of us should reflect upon very carefully.
2. How Can We Recognize a False Teacher?
1 Timothy 6:3-5
Another important teaching in this chapter concerns false and true teachers.
A false teacher can be recognized by the nature of their message.
When teaching focuses primarily on material things without presenting genuine faith or showing people the way of salvation, we must be cautious.
A teacher whose entire message revolves around themselves rather than Jesus Christ may be a false teacher.
If their message is not Christ-centered, this should cause us to examine it carefully.
On the other hand, a true teacher leads people to Jesus.
Their goal is not to draw people to themselves but to help them know the Lord.
This is therefore an important principle for discerning the nature of the teachings we receive.
3. True Faith: Keeping Our Eyes Fixed on Jesus
1 Timothy 6:6-11
What is true faith?
True faith means not limiting our attention to earthly and material things but keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ.
Our Christian life should not revolve solely around what we can possess or obtain in this world.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that we brought nothing into this world and that we can take nothing out of it.
He also warns us about the dangers associated with the love of money and the desire to become rich.
Material possessions must therefore never take God's place in our lives.
Our faith must remain centered on Jesus Christ, not merely on wealth and earthly benefits.
4. Fight the Good Fight of Faith Without Being Ashamed of Jesus
1 Timothy 6:12
“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called.”
We live in a world where the Christian faith faces strong opposition.
Sometimes people may accept discussions about God or spirituality but become resistant when we openly proclaim the name of Jesus Christ.
Yet we must never be ashamed of our Lord.
We believe that Jesus is able to heal and accomplish great things.
May God help us never to be ashamed of Him!
We must be willing to introduce Jesus Christ to those around us and allow our faith to be reflected in our daily lives.
Our desire should be for God to work not only in our own lives but also in the lives of the people around us.
May others see Jesus through us, and may we never be ashamed to introduce them to our Lord!
This, too, is part of fighting the good fight of faith.
5. When God Blesses You, Be Generous
1 Timothy 6:17-19
The Apostle Paul also gives a special instruction to the rich.
But this teaching also concerns everyone who hopes to receive material blessings.
When you become wealthy, how should you behave?
The answer is simple: be generous.
In Mark 10, we discover the story of the rich young man who came to Jesus.
This man kept the commandments and lived an exemplary religious life. Yet Jesus helped him understand that he still lacked one thing.
Jesus asked him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him.
But the man went away sorrowful because he had great possessions.
This story teaches us the importance of generosity.
When God blesses you, do not isolate yourself in your wealth. Learn to share.
From your salary and the possessions God gives you, there should be a portion set aside for those in need, those who have nothing, and those who reach out to you for help.
When God blesses you, do not forget the poor and those who need your help.
Generosity should accompany material blessings.
6. Avoid Useless Arguments and Put Your Trust in God
1 Timothy 6:20-21
In the final verses of this chapter, Paul instructs Timothy to guard what has been entrusted to him and avoid empty, profane discussions.
This teaching also applies to us.
We should not engage in arguments that do not lead us toward salvation or that revolve around matters which make no meaningful contribution to our spiritual lives.
Some discussions distract us from what truly matters instead of bringing us closer to God.
We must therefore remain committed to the truth and live out our faith sincerely.
It is also important to remember that our confidence must not rest on riches.
Money can become the source of many evils when it takes an excessive place in our hearts.
Our hope must remain in God, not in the uncertain riches of this world.
Conclusion: Be a Witness for Christ and a Generous Wealthy Person
Throughout this chapter, we discover several essential instructions for our walk with God.
Our behavior should honor the Lord and positively influence those around us. We must recognize genuine teachings that lead to Jesus Christ, keep our eyes fixed on Him, and fight the good fight of faith.
We must never be ashamed to proclaim Jesus, because we are called to be soul winners.
Finally, when God grants us material blessings, we must learn to share with those in need.
Final Declaration and Blessing
I decree and declare that you will become generous wealthy people!
I decree and declare that you will fight the good fight of faith and that we will not be ashamed to evangelize, because we are soul winners.
May God bless you abundantly!
Have an excellent day, everyone!
